Hi I’m Jo
I’m Jo Davies — founder of Calerae and creator of the Beyond Survival approach to sustainable human capacity.
After 25 years in the corporate world, raising three children, and navigating severe burnout and an ME relapse, I experienced firsthand what happens when modern life outpaces human infrastructure.
Survival mode becomes normal.
Until it isn’t.
That experience didn’t break me.
It clarified my work.
For most of my adult life, I did what capable women do.
I worked hard.
I progressed.
I raised three children.
I answered emails in car parks between activities.
I kept everything moving.
From the outside, it looked fine.
Inside, I was running a 24-hour logistics operation with no off-switch.
There was always more to do.
Always someone who needed something.
Always another invisible standard to meet.
I assumed that was just adulthood.
It wasn’t.
It was survival mode — dressed up as competence.
Burnout didn’t arrive dramatically.
No big collapse.
No inspirational turning point.
Just exhaustion that didn’t improve with a weekend off.
Brain fog that wouldn’t lift.
An ME relapse that forced me to stop properly — which, as it turns out, is surprisingly hard when you’re used to being “the reliable one.”
That period changed how I see everything.
Not because I discovered better time management.
But because I realised something much less comfortable:
The problem wasn’t my resilience.
It was the conditions.
Modern life had accelerated.
Expectations expanded.
Support systems thinned.
Technology blurred every boundary it promised to improve.
And like so many women — and so many professionals — I tried to optimise myself inside systems that were quietly draining me.
More discipline.
Better habits.
Stronger mindset.
If personal effort were the solution, I’d have cracked it.
That’s when the penny dropped.
We’ve become very good at adding solutions.
We’ve become far less skilled at questioning the foundations.
Calerae was built from that realisation.
What if wellbeing isn’t something to bolt on —
but something to design properly?
I started developing the frameworks I couldn’t find anywhere else.

The Business Ecosystem Framework
Helping organisations stop layering initiatives and start strengthening infrastructure.
The Calerae Companion
A practical structure individuals can actually hold — not just nod along to.
None of it came from theory alone.
It came from lived experience. Corporate reality.
And rebuilding properly — without pretending everything was fine.
Today, I work with organisations navigating modern pressure and working mums carrying more than anyone can see.
Different context.
Same principle.
Stabilise first.
Strengthen foundations.
Design conditions that support sustainable human capacity.
Because survival mode isn’t a personality trait.
And strength shouldn’t require heroic levels of coping.
“Recovery is not indulgence. It’s regulation.”
